As one of RIKEN’s research centers, the RIKEN Center for Advanced Photonics (RAP) promotes advanced photonics research ranging from fundamental optical science to photonics-based technologies that contribute to society. RAP explores the full potential of light to open new frontiers in science and technology.
Under RAP’s vision of “Edge Photonics,” the word “edge” has three interconnected meanings. First, it refers to cutting-edge photonics that pushes the frontiers of optical science, including world-leading research in areas such as ultra-precise optical lattice clocks and ultrafast photonics using femtosecond and attosecond light sources. Second, it represents photonics at the boundaries between disciplines, reflecting an “Interdisciplinary Photonics” approach that crosses conventional academic boundaries and uses light as a common foundation to open new research fields in areas such as life sciences, quantum science, and materials science. Third, it refers to photonics at the network edge, where cyber and physical spaces meet, enabling new approaches to measurement, control, and device technologies by integrating photonics with AI and information science.
At UP2026, RAP will present its latest activities and research platforms that support interdisciplinary collaboration in photonics. Through the development of novel light sources, measurement techniques, optical devices, and advanced manufacturing technologies, RAP aims to create new scientific value and promote innovations that address emerging challenges in research, industry, and society.
RAP welcomes opportunities for international collaboration and exchange with researchers, engineers, companies, and institutions working at the forefront of photonics and related fields.

Corporate Website: https://www.few-cycle.com/
few-cycle Inc. few‑cycle Inc. was founded in 2013 as a spin‑off from the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS‑EMT). The company is based in Varennes, Canada, with its laser research laboratory located within the INRS building.
few-cycle Inc. develops optical technologies for ultrafast laser science, with core expertise in generating high-power femtosecond laser pulses from the deep ultraviolet (DUV) to the mid-infrared (mid-IR). These pulses can comprise light waves with only a few oscillations, lasting just a few femtoseconds (1 fs = 10⁻¹⁵ s) - timescale is so short that one femtosecond relates to one second roughly as one second relates to the age of the universe.
Our core strength is curiosity: seeking fundamentally different solutions rather than only incrementally optimizing established approaches. In this spirit, we are redefining nonlinear frequency conversion with our HYPerspectral Ultrafast Source (HYPUS™), a radically different approach that addresses key limitations of conventional parametric sources. This development builds on our core pulse-compression technology: a highly versatile platform based on stretched hollow-core fibers (few-cycle™ HCF).
The few-cycle™ HCF system can be tailored through fiber length and inner diameter to achieve the desired compression factor across a wide range of input pulse parameters. Experimentally measured transmission for multi-mJ femtosecond pulses can reach up to 97%. The platform supports extreme performance in both input pulse energy (50 µJ to 100 mJ) and average power (up to 300 W at 1030 nm).
The HYPUS™ provides a simplified, efficient alternative to optical parametric amplification, delivering six fully synchronized channels from 200 nm to beyond 10 µm, with pulse energies above 5 µJ per channel and timing jitter as low as 1.1 fs.
To measure ultrashort pulses across a wide spectral range, we developed the Orchestra™ FROG: a unique compact device for pulse characterization from 200 nm to 2 µm.
